Baytown Public Safety Building
This project is the end point of an arduous four-year journey that took the city through exploring moving into an existing 12 story building, to landing on building a new facility behind the current building and demolishing the current one. The new Public Safety Complex will house the entire Police force as well as the Fire Administration for the city in a 112,000 SF new three-story facility on a campus that includes the current Courts, Jail and EOC buildings. The project also includes a 31,000 SF vehicle maintenance facility and two 10,000 SF Police vehicle storage buildings. The new building will have a shared lobby and community room for both Police and Fire. The Fire Administration will occupy a portion of the first and second floor. The Fire area will be separated from the rest of the police facility to maintain CJIS security of police data. The Police portion of the facility will include records, domestic violence, patrol, property & evidence, special operations, criminal investigations, crime prevention, support services and police administration. Staff support areas include lockers and fitness as well as a full kitchen to support staff during hurricanes. A new 31,000 SF vehicle maintenance building for both Police and Fire mechanics will be built as part of phase one to move it before the new public safety building can be built. Maintaining operations of the current police facility during construction was instrumental in the location of the new facility. The third phase is to demolish the existing facility create a new public plaza, vehicle display building and public parking. The current court will have a new entry, lobby and restrooms to replace those in the current police facility. The entire 30 acre site will have security fences and gates as well as a walking trail around the detention pond. The entire facility will be designed to withstand hurricane force winds with such items as impact resistant glass. The building will include some innovative spaces such as a small lobby for returning property that is separate from the main lobby, a social media space that has a green screen and podcasting areas, and a drone balcony with nearby charging area. The project construction delivery is CM at Risk with Durotech Construction and the schedule move into the new public safety Fall of 2023. The Construction budget is $60 million with a $65 million overall project budget.
